“I am a travel buff who loves standing on ground where historic events happened. This book is focused on events in France as far back as 2,300 years ago thru the 20th century. I started learning interesting facts on page two ! Knowing where to go to visit an ancient Roman fortress; walking the same ground where thousands died fighting for their religion or country or power. This book provides that, and then provides details on local museums, cathedrals, art galleries, etc.. oh ya, restaurants as well. Well written and well researched. I plan to organize my next trip to France around recommendations in this book. I loved it !”
“This book is a great source of information on little known battle sites in France and it offers much more than the normal run of the mill tourist book. It gives much deeper insight into the history of long forgotten battles that occurred in places often overlooked. I highly recommend the book.”
“If you are a history buff and want to plan a trip, pick this book up. It is especially useful if you are traveling with folks who aren't as interested in history. Knowing what to do in the area besides a castle or battlefield is immensely useful when convincing my family where to go!”
“For those travelers who want to combine their taste for history, this guide is perfect! In addition, very practical since it presents a ranking from "must see" to "if you don't have anything better to do". Provides good recommendations on museums and restaurants. The best thing is that it includes other activities for those who are not fans of battles. The resources presented are vast for those who like detail. Very good option to take a tour of the places, even if it is virtual !!!” [translated from Spanish]
“This is a unique sort of travel guide, focusing on battlefields and cultural attractions. I enjoyed the history bits and appreciate the descriptions of local attractions. I think this is a good book for couples, as it has information of interest to history buffs and companions who might be more interested in galleries, shopping, etc.”
“This book kept me up most of the night after I received it. It's an engaging historical description of battles and battlefields from ancient to recent times, written with prospective travelers in mind. More than the history of the battles fought there, it provides practical information about regions, access, parking, even local accommodation and cuisine specialties. As it assumes that the reader will be using a car and GSP, it also provides estimated travel time between sites, even warning about traffic hazards and recommended scenic routes. I must admit that I would like to have had access to detailed local maps which I hope might be included in a second edition. This is a masterly work and a treasure for history lovers and Francophiles. Highly recommended.”
